It was opened in 1913 for five stages and takes you through the Alps to the Mediterranean on the Cote d’Azur, crossing 16 high Alpine passes in the process. Nine of these passes have an altitude of over 2,000 metres, and include the highest paved pass in the Alps, the Col de l’Iseran at an altitude of 2,770 metres. With a length of approx. 700 kilometres, the route overcomes a difference in altitude of 15,700 metres. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful routes in the world.
